Performance

There are three engines to consider for the Ford Explorer. The base is a turbo V4 that gets 300 horsepower. It's a good engine, but the upgrade offers an even more thrilling performance for your trips around Saranac Lake. You can enjoy the performance of a turbo V6 with 400 horsepower. It is more powerful and kicks up the acceleration to an extent that is rare in three-row SUVs. All-wheel drive is available as an upgrade for both engines. There is also a hybrid option that reduces gas consumption and gets a combined 318 horsepower, and it is available on the two top trims.

Technology

The new Explorer's infotainment appears extremely well-designed and easy to use. The menus are fast and clear. For a display, the base version is an 8-inch touchscreen, while the upgrade is a 10.1-inch vertically-oriented touchscreen. Apple Car Play and Android Auto come standard, as does Wi-Fi and a set of USB ports. Tech upgrades include the usual wireless device charging pads, additional USB ports, and other amenities. The comfort features for seating include power adjustments, heating, upholstery upgrades, and more. Some trims will also have access to tri-zone climate control, giving each row a unique temperature for cruising around Tupper Lake.

Safety

The Ford Explorer received stellar ratings on crash tests from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The IIHS also gave the Explorer a Top Safety Pick+ rating, its top designation. Trim Levels

There are eight trims for the Ford Explorer. The base trim arrives well-equipped. The second trim, the XLT, adds several seating upgrades and keyless entry, and it also opens two packages and a set of independent options, like a moonroof. The ST-Line trim rolls those two packages into the features and adds more amenities, like an improved adaptive cruise control, an upgraded sound system, and a digital instrument display. The Limited trim has seating upgrades and leather upholstery, plus some new options.

The Timberline trim is a special model because it comes equipped with several off-roading features. The ST is also notable because it is the first trim with the upgraded engine. The top two trims are the Platinum and King Ranch, with a host of luxe interior upgrades to enhance your trips to Massena.
